The Tech-Savvy Psychologist

Psychology practice is ripe for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology innovation, and we are on the cusp of a revolution in the delivery of mental healthcare services. AI and digital technology are about to break the mould of how we deliver services and psychologists will be liberated from what can be automated or accomplished better by technology. Freed to do more complex and rewarding work and clients will be more likely to receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

Brendan Meagher and Tamara Cavenett take the reader on a journey exploring how and why this revolution is about to occur. The coming wave of AI and digital technology is good news. AI and digital technology will not replace psychologists. Rather, psychologists who use AI and digital technology will replace psychologists who do not because AI and digital technology will allow psychologists to better serve their clients.

The Tech–Savvy Psychologist is an essential and practical guide for psychologists wanting to integrate AI and digital technology into their practice. All psychologists can become tech savvy and deliver an optimal experience to their clients by combining the power of technology with the human touch.

What Readers Are Saying

In a few short years, technological innovation in our profession has accelerated. The linear growth we had become accustomed to has been replaced by an exponential explosion of advances. These developments offer the opportunity to fundamentally change the way that psychologists work and that our clients receive help. There are profound opportunities but also risks and pitfalls. Brendan and Tamara have taken on the daunting task of trying to filter the innovations in the tech space to just those relevant to psychology. They offer a clear and comprehensive review of the field, as well as practical and considered recommendations for those wanting to learn more. This small compendium is an absolute must-own for psychologists who do not want to fall behind.

The Tech-Savvy Psychologist is an invaluable encouragement and resource for all psychologists, whether they are thinking about the next few steps to enhance the telehealth experience or are ready to consider and embrace all that AI and digital therapeutics have to offer.

Sharon Southwell

Clinical Psychologist

Technology used to be a part of our ways of living and working, but over recent years (and especially post-COVID) we have seen a transformational period where technology is a cornerstone to our being. With the amazing developments, if harnessed correctly we’ll see great efficiency, connectivity to people in remote and regional areas and modernisation of the health and mental health sectors, like we’ve seen in other industries before it. We need to embrace the change, especially in the mental health sector where the workforce shortage and supply and demand curve are under pressure – hopefully, technology can enable better care, and more efficient systems and have more people treated than ever before, where and when they need it. This book is an indispensable guide through the ever-evolving landscape of digital technology.

Matt Berriman

Chair, Mental Health Australia

As AI and digital technology become an integral part of our everyday lives, psychology and clinical practice have fallen behind compared to other areas of society that have embraced the technology. The Tech-Savvy Psychology is a must-read for all psychologists, whatever stage they are in their careers. This book will help to navigate the challenges faced by psychologists in effectively using AI to enhance their practice. It is an essential resource for all clinicians.

Dr Steve Carroll

Clinical Director, Better Outcomes Psychology

The future growth of the psychology profession is likely to be strongly supported by the further development and wider use of digital technology. This book clearly spells out much of the nature and range of the most relevant developments to date. Brendan and Tamara’s diligent and generous efforts make this technology far more comprehensible and accessible to psychologists in a way that will practically advance our profession.

Clinical Psychologist, Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society.
Author of The Positive Psychology of Synchronicity: Enhance Your Mental Health with the Power of Coincidence

As we progress through the most fundamental change in the way that psychologists ply their trade, it is reassuring to know that two psychologists, Brendan and Tamara, have done the heavy lifting for us in documenting the what, how and when of digital transformation and in a way that is easily readable – in bite-sized chunks so that we don’t feel overwhelmed. If you want to feel confident in your approach to technology integration and decision-making, read this book!

Ros Knight

Former President of the Australian Psychological Society

The Tech-Savvy Psychologist is a great addition to your client and practice management tool kit. It provides a structure to work through when reviewing how tech savvy you are in your practice and how you can harness the benefits of digital health innovations safely and at a pace that works for your context. It is a brave move for Brendan Meagher and Tamara Cavenett to publish this guide, as so much is changing quickly in the AI and technology space. Without their guidance, it would be easy to get overwhelmed. Their approach is practical and makes a strong case that doing nothing is not a choice for healthcare providers in the face of technology. I also like the way the authors encourage us to recognise how we are already using technology in our own lives and that without actively engaging with it, we will struggle to deal with compliance costs, consumer expectations and accountability to third-party funders. Be an early adopter of this book – you won’t regret it. I think it will become a go-to for a reliable, evidence-based framework and related recommendations that will stand the test of time and make the process of becoming a tech-savvy psychologist something both inevitable but also exciting.
